New
Guideline Urges Screening For Fall Risk

Certain people are at high risk for accidental falling and should be
screened regularly to reduce the number of fall-related injuries and deaths.
New guidelines issued through the American Academy of Neurology and
published in The Medical Journal of Neurology tried to warn doctors and
patients alike. The new guidelines recommend that doctors ask patients about
falls, and educate them in how to reduce the risk of falling. People at
highest risk for falls include those that have stroke, dementia, and walking
and balance disorders. In addition, people with Parkinson's, neuropathy,
weakness in the legs or feet, and vision loss are also at risk. Virtually,
everyone over the age of 60 is at risk of falling and developing hip
fractures. Since hip fractures can be fatal, efforts should be made to
reduce falls. Besides reducing risk of falls, it is important to strengthen
bones so that if an individual does fall, it will not result in a fracture.
