Don't Let ED Get You Down

If you knew that eating more fruits and vegetables and getting more exercise could help improve your love life, would that motivate you to adopt healthier habits? Poor vascular health caused by a sedentary lifestyle, stress, and a poor diet can really put a damper on a man's ability to perform. Fortunately actions can be taken to help improve blood flow allowing these men to fully rise to the occasion.

ED, also known more formally as erectile dysfunction, is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection. It is estimated to affect about half of men age 40-70. This condition has come out of the shadows in recent years thanks in part to the heavy marketing of prescription drugs targeting ED. Who hasn't heard of the "the little blue pill"? While these medications have helped many men they are not for everyone and they can have potentially dangerous side effects. What these commercials often don't advertise is that ED can be the first sign that there is a more serious health problem going on in the body and by taking action to improve total health, you can help reduce the risk of ED.

Causes
ED can occur for many reasons. Stress, anxiety and depression can lead to episodes of ED. Nerve damage, neurological diseases, substance abuse, hormonal problems and some medications can cause it as well, but vascular disease is thought to be the most common cause of ED.

Healthy Blood Vessels Are Vital
ED can be the first sign that a man's vascular health is declining. What's going on inside his body is made apparent by loss of function in an organ that relies on healthy blood vessels to work properly. When blood vessels become hardened, blocked or constricted they are going to impair blood flow. Heart disease, hypertension and diabetes are conditions associated with vascular disease. High cholesterol, smoking and obesity can make vascular disease worse.

Lifestyle Changes
Fortunately for many men, simply taking better care of their health can help improve their ED. Research suggests that being physically active and maintaining a healthy body weight can reduce the risk of developing ED. If you are overweight, losing weight can help improve ED. A 2004 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that about one third of the obese men in the study with ED who lost weight and exercised were able to improve their sexual function with lifestyle changes alone. In addition, it should go without saying that if you smoke, you should quit! Smoking increases the risk of ED.

Diet
An "ED" diet is one that is also good for heart and vascular health. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains. Choose fish, chicken and lean cuts of meat. Avoid fried or processed foods, and limit sodium, sugar and saturated or trans fats. Include whole foods that are rich in antioxidants and flavonoids such as berries, cherries, dark green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, orange and yellow fruits and vegetables, green tea and dark chocolate or cocoa. Healthy fat sources include oily fish, olives and olive oil, avocados and omega-3 fat-rich walnuts and vitamin E-rich almonds.

One study suggests that drinking pomegranate juice can help men with ED. 47 % of the men who drank 8 oz. of pomegranate juice daily for one month reported improvement, compared to 32% of the men who consumed a placebo. (Int J Impot Res, 2007 June 14). Pomegranates are a naturally rich source of potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. Scientists believe that pomegranates can help protect vascular health by reducing oxidative stress, boosting nitric oxide synthesis, and preventing oxidative damage to bad LDL cholesterol which makes it more dangerous.

Supplements
Making the appropriate lifestyle changes through diet and exercise can be all it takes to help improve vascular health and get things back "in working order". Of course there are many dietary supplements marketed for ED. Supplements marketed to enhance sexual function should be scrutinized carefully. Ask your healthcare professional before taking anything if you suffer from cardiovascular disease or other serious health conditions.

Arginine is an amino acid the body uses to make nitric oxide. Nitric oxide helps dilate blood vessels and improve blood flow. Early studies suggest that arginine may help men with ED. Dosing in the studies ranged from 2.8 grams to 5 grams per day. Arginine supplementation has also been shown to help improve other vascular conditions such as atherosclerosis. Men with kidney or liver disease should consult their doctor before taking arginine.

Pycnogenol is a flavonoid-rich supplement obtained from the bark of the French maritime pine tree, and there is some clinical evidence that adding it to low-dose arginine treatment may improve effectiveness. Some research has found pycnogenol may provide other vascular benefits such as improving blood pressure and lowering bad LDL cholesterol.

Ginkgo biloba is an herbal supplement that relaxes vascular muscles and improves blood flow, which may be helpful for ED.

Yohimbe is a heavily marketed supplement used to enhance sexual performance, but it is not recommended due to potentially dangerous side effects. It is obtained from the bark of an African evergreen tree and is regulated as a drug in some countries but it is not approved for use in Germany. Taking too much can cause severe low blood pressure and other heart problems, even death.

Panax ginseng (aka Asian ginseng) has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine to promote health and improve physical performance. Studies suggest it may also provide some benefits for those suffering from ED, possibly by increasing the release of nitric oxide, which helps open blood vessels to improved blood flow.

Always consult with your healthcare provider, especially if you already have a health condition such as high blood pressure, diabetes or heart disease or are on prescription drugs.
