Cholesterol is a soft, waxy substance found in the bloodstream and every cell in the body. It's normal and critical to have the right amount and the right kind of cholesterol to perform many bodily functions, such as producing cell membranes and some hormones. However, too much cholesterol in the blood is a major risk factor for heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. LDL is "bad" cholesterol and is produced naturally in the body, mostly by the liver. If you have too much of it in your blood, it can build up in the arteries and form clots. HDL is known as "good" cholesterol; high levels have been shown to protect against a heart attack by removing excess "bad" cholesterol, thus slowing its buildup. It is important to keep your LDL down and your HDL high to prevent future diseases. A healthy diet low in cholesterol and fats, combined with a regular diet program, are essential for controlling cholesterol. However, the amount of LDL that your body produces depends on hereditary; sometimes, a heart-healthy diet and exercise are not enough. In cases like this, supplementation can help to regulate and support your cholesterol levels, increasing your HDL and decreasing your LDL. Many prescription medications paralyze the liver to stop it from producing cholesterol. This might lower your LDL, but some cholesterol in the body is critical for normal functioning. All-natural cholesterol supplements take a different route -- they can support the body's own natural metabolism of cholesterol and reduce the intestinal absorption of LDL and raise HDL levels.
